Batman has been loved by many generations. Batman was first created by Bob Kane, in May, 1939 and quickly became a cult figure of DC Comics. He reflects the qualities of a superhero through his moral code, costume, gadgets and many more. Over the last 70's years the popularity of Batman has seen the character evolve and adapt to different generations of fans. Between the ages of the 1940s and the 1980s there has been an increase in the setting of a darker and more crime riddled Gotham city. This therefore shows changes that have occurred in society over the decades. occur in society over the decades. Each of the comics represent batman differently. One depicts him as a hero while the other depicts him as a vigilante who takes the law into his own hands. Each of these provides a different view on how the comics characterises batman. In the 1980’s batman is depicted as a vigilante. The characterisation reflects on the time that the comic was made. This coincides with the darker tone and the controversial topics such as whether the police can be trusted not to be corrupt. In comparison, the 1940’s comic portrays batman as a hero and displays simpler topics to entertain the audience. This comic was created during a decade where people were affected by the World wars, with people looking for a hero to save them. Batman is presented as that hero who is serving criminals justice for the sake of his city which is not named Gotham city until the early 60s.
