Personal Statement

For many years, I have dreamed of becoming a reporter. My current major in Communications at East Los Angeles College reflects this passion, but I believe that my professional and personal experiences to date have also armed me with the tools necessary to pursue this career path.
I am originally from Hong Kong, where I lived until the completion of High School. The challenges involved in moving to a new country, confronting cultural differences, meeting new people, and the obstacles presented by language barriers put my resolve to the test. I should ultimately choose. Of course, an understanding of mass media is likely to move me closer to my dream of becoming a reporter, and this is an understanding I am nurturing each day.
I speak three languages: Mandarin, English and Cantonese. Clearly, languages come easily to me, which I believe is a useful skill in the media industry. The other aspect of communications that appeals to me is the opportunity to work with people - directly and indirectly. I look forward to bringing people information in a meaningful and helpful manner as a reporter. And, I look forward to being part of a team, and working with a larger group of professionals to deliver the news.
I have one year of experience working in the field of education, teaching children ages 5-14 Cantonese and Mandarin. Additionally, I have worked in banking, as a teller.
