Extinction will occur when the (CS) is no longer linked to the (US), which means the association between the two are broken and will not result in a (CR). Pavlov's research demonstrated extinction when the dog was not presented with the food after a number of times (Hoeksema et al 2009). Spontaneous recovery can take place after extinction has occurred. It involves a (CS) exerting a stronger (CR) then previously experienced during the end of extinction (Baldwin 2001).
