The son of Robert and Mary Bannaky, Benjamin Banneker, was born in Maryland on November 9, 1731. His grandfather was a slave from Africa and his grandmother, an indentured servant from England. However, he was perhaps the best-known black person in early United States history as being a farmer, astronomer, mathematician and surveyor (Raymond. 2002).

he developed a intense interest in mathematics and science. However, later, while farming, he practiced his mathematical studies and taught himself astronomy (Raymond. 2002).
While he was still a youth; he built a wooden clock that kept correct time for the remainder of his life making it a clock perhaps the first made entirely in the United States. He was dedicated much as well as to the study of astronomy, and so spent much of his nights wrapped in a blanket, studying the stars until sunrise. On the other hand, his days were devoted to the study in mathematics (Conley.1989).
Banneker was self-taught in mathematics. Reaching the age of forties, he read his first mathematics text. It was at the age of twenty-one, where his abilities were finally utilized by meeting Josef Levi who showed him a pocket watch. Being so fascinated by the watch that Levi gave it to.
