Benjamin Franklin, The Autobiography



In Benjamin Franklin’s autobiography he tells the stories of his life from a young lad to the year 1757 when he was 51 years old. Franklin discovered that he was the youngest son of the youngest son for five generations. He first thought he would be part of the clergy, but his father took him out of school and employed his as an assistant in making candles. He also developed a love for the sea and wanted to be a sailor, but his father did not approve. As he grew up he became attached to books and loved to read and began serving as an apprentice to a printer.

After arriving in London, Franklin discovered the Governor had not been completely straight with him, but he did find work at a famous printing house. Eighteen months later Franklin left London to return to America as a merchant’s clerk. It wasn’t long before Franklin and his boss both took ill and his boss died leaving Franklin out of a job again. He looked for work as a merchant clerk but instead returned to work at a printing house. Also during this time Franklin began to rethink his religious convictions. He vowed to operate honestly in all dealings and recognized the importance of character and reputation. Franklin conceived of the idea of arriving at moral perfection. He wanted to live without any fault at any time, but discovered that he had undertaken a task that was far more difficult than he had imaged.
