Beowulf: An Anglo-Saxon Epic Hero



The epic poem Beowulf describes the most heroic man of the Anglo-
Saxon times. The hero of the poem, Beowulf, is portrayed as an invincible
warrior with all the amazing, non-human like traits required by an Anglo-
Saxon hero. He is able to use his super-human physical strength and
courage to defend and put his people before himself at all times. He
encounters life ending monsters and ferocious beasts but never fears death
while fighting them. Beowulf has great leadership skills and sometimes
boasts about all his achievements. Beowulf is the perfect Anglo-Saxon epic
hero who risks his life a number of times for not only personal glory but

of Beowulf’s
strength is his defeat of Grendel, a beastly monster. Beowulf not only
kills Grendel but rips the beasts arm off and brings it to his mother. His
men admire Beowulf’s skills and courage. Also, when Beowulf is fighting
Grendel's mother, who is seeking revenge on her son's death, he is able to
end her life by slashing the monster's neck with a sword. The sword
belongs to a Giant and can only be lifted by a person as strong as Beowulf.
When he chops off her head, he carries the heavy head all the way to
Hrothgar to show him he has been victorious once again. Hrothgar and all
the other men witness this and their view of Beowulf becomes once again
mighty and proud. To sum up, Beowulf’s strength is a key trait of
Beowulf's heroism, and admired by many.
Second, another heroic trait of Beowulf is his consistency to put
his people first no matter what the deathly odds are. Beowulf is asked by
the king of the Gates to get rid of the terrorizing monster Grendel. ...
