Beowulf - Good vs. Evil

The Anglo-Saxon literary work Beowulf presents an array of traits that the people of this period thought highly of. Many of these traits are seen through the main character Beowulf, and are contrasted by the monster’s he faces. Good versus evil is a conflict that has transgressed throughout the epic poem. In this epic poem Beowulf shows all the characteristics of an epic hero including strength, bravery and loyalty allowing him to fight and represent what is good. However, for there to be good there must also be evil and in Beowulf it is shown through demon, Grendel, that Beowulf encounters.

that he has the power to stop this bloodshed from continuing for another twelve years. He shows an extreme amount of loyalty to Hrothgar and kills Grendel’s Mother once she seeks out revenge for his death. He could have easily seized the throne from Hrothgar, with everything that he did for the Danes, but his loyalty to them keeps him from even thinking about it. Along with his high level of loyalty he also has a high level of integrity since he counts himself “as dangerous any day as Grendel” and yet he will not use a sword to fight him. He shows respect to this demon even though he will never get respect from it in return. Beowulf is clearly a representation of the good and righteous in this epic poem.

“For twelve winter, seasons of woe” Grendel terrorized the Danes “inflicting constant cruelties” upon them. He was Bloodthirsty, taking the lives of both the young and old. Described as a “demonic” monster that is “stealthy and swift” yielding great strength. ...
