In the epic, Beowulf, the definition of hero is defined by many of its characters. They all show the courage and leadership that a hero has. Even though many of them have those attributes, none stand out like the epic’s main protagonist Beowulf. Each hero has their standout qualities, but Beowulf’s gets more attention. Beowulf qualifies as the superior hero because of his prevailing sense of strength, bravery, wisdom, and longevity as a leader.
Beowulf’s display of strength in the epic outshines the other heroes. By looking at his many battles, it becomes easy to tell of his great strength. After many become defeated by the Grendel, Beowulf comes in and quickly conquers ...

Another quality of Beowulf that makes him the superior hero is his wisdom. When Beowulf is questioned about his swimming match with Brecca by Unferth he keeps his composure. Instead of getting angry and violent like most people would, Beowulf tells his account of what happened in a calm manner (529-610). Beowulf manages to not look guilt of Unferth’s accusations and ends up making Unferth look ignorant. In this situation, Beowulf uses his wisdom to make himself look good by staying collected. His wisdom allows him to have a way with his words allowing him to look good among others. Beowulf also shows his wisdom after he defeats Grendel and Grendel’s mother. He is given treasures for saving the people of Herot hall, but instead of keeping them for himself he gives it away to his king Higlac.
