Betrayal Meets Good in Macbeth and Mister Pip

Macduff flees to England hoping to bring back the king's heir, he abandons his family. This leaves his family vulnerable. Macbeth takes advantage of this by placing a surprise attack on the castle of fife so he can kill "his wife, his babes, and all the unfortunate souls that trace him in his line" (IV.ii.150). Macduff regrets his mistake as he was not there for them when needed and because his loyalty stayed with Scotland instead of his family. His "wife and children's ghosts will haunt" (V.vii.17) his conscience for the rest of his life. Macduff displays how he put his loyalty to something before he put it to his family and himself. Corresponding to this is Mr. Watts in the novel Mister Pip, not only does he lack trust in himself but also loyalty to his family.
