Jan Christian Smuts, a South Africa Field marshal, once said that wars are won not by great victories, but by great blunders; World War II is full of examples of the field marshal's dictum. Germany, though they had many large victories, made three big, costly mistakes. The first mistake was the invasion of the Soviet Union. Germany could not withstand fighting a two-sided war with the USA on the western front and the USSR on the eastern front. Secondly, Hitler erred at Dunkirk in 1940. which was the code word the German invasion of Soviet Russia. Although this operation started off looking promising for Germany, it slowly changed to a grim outlook. Hitler caught the USSR off guard when he invaded. It violated the standing Nazi-Soviet Non-Aggression Pact signed between Soviet Russia and Germany signed in 1939. Through the course of seven months, Germany marched closer and closer, but never into, to the Russian capital city of Moscow. This seven month span took a heavy toll on the German forces. Shortly after Germany invaded Russia, Japan launched an attack against America at the naval base in Hawaii called Pearl Harbor dragging the relatively uninvolved United States of America into the war on the side of the Allied Forces. Back in the European theater, this now meant that Hitler has a slowly failing invasion of Russia on the eastern border and a now strengthening opponent on the western border.
