Black Arts In The Tempest and Doctor Faustus

In both William Shakespeare's play The Tempest and Christopher Marlowe's play Doctor Faustus, the principal characters, being Prospero and Doctor Faustus respectively, equally employ elements of magic conjuring and the black arts to achieve the ends that they desire. While Prospero is clearly reclaimed and ennobled at the end of Shakespeare's work, Faustus, on the other hand, is seemingly damned to hell and certainly does not experience the esteemed return to power that Prospero enjoys. The difference has much to do with the genres of the plays and the positions of the characters. and usurped him in the first place, he can be reclaimed at then end. Faustus, on the other hand, who is moved more by his ennui and hubris, must be punished for his acts.
Prospero's, like Doctor Faustus, gains his knowledge through ancient and arcane study and he is able to use his learning in such a fashion that it enables him to control his surrounding by supernatural means. Indeed, the connection between his book learning and his mastery of nature (which he calls his art) have lead many commentators to compare Prospero to Shakespeare, himself, although this parallel breaks down fairly quickly. One thing we learn very quickly about Prospero is that his art is studied and while he uses it to exact revenge he only wishes to right the wrongs done to him, rather than to harm anyone:

So safely ordered that there is no soul--
No, not so much perdition as an hair
Betid to any creature in the vessel
