Throughout the novel there are many allusions, which dominate the work to enhance the meaning.
In the first few chapters Hurston introduces the characters and the good of Ultima. Antonio also begins to form a stronger bond with her over the summer by studying her techniques with plants. Later in the novel Antonio begins to question his relationship with God. Uncle Lucas.
