a local Jamaican religious movement with few outside influences. The
movement was dominated by “Elders” with widely varying views. There was no
agreement on basic doctrine or scripture. The Holy Piby and the King James Bible were
used by various Elders, but were freely emended and “corrected” (Angelfire 3).
Reggae was at the height of its popularity during the Classical Period. Explicitly
religious lyrics were the norm. The famous “dreadlocks” were worn during this period.
Historical research suggests that the dreadlocks were popularized by a monastic
movement which opposed the unrestrained and potentially corrupting power of the Elders.
Dreadlocks continued to be worn as a symbol of ritual practices of the “voudon-like”
religion of the jamaican peasantry.
The use of marijuana is also a characteristic of the Rastas. Contrary to popular

Cherry, Constantine Walker, and Bob Marley formed the band, “ The Wailers.” Cherry
and Junior left the band after a few recording sessions. Bob acted as the leader of the
band and he wrote most of the material. The Wailers became very popular by 1965 and
played in full houses. Under the Coxsone label they recorded several hits such as Simmer
