Boxing Blog Analysis:

The author of the blog post that I read brought up some very interesting points about boxing in his post that I hadn’t considered. His main point was that there was something that separated boxing from fighting and other forms of brutality: Science. This idea is the basis for this analysis. Referencing boxing as the “sweet science,” as it is often called; he cites this “science” regarding pugilism as the fine line separating boxing from brutality. This confusion so clearly illustrates this public misconception of boxing because it distinguishably confuses the brutality inherent in gouging to with boxing. This misconception is one of the reasons that even still today some cannot distinguish between boxing and fighting or brutality.
It is not surprising to think of some of the misconceptions that people held in the time period, as even in matches that were considered boxing matches this “science” was not present and we see brutality and excess unfold. There was an incident in 1842 where a boxer was killed in the ring after nearly three hours of battle (Riess, 57.)
