Introduction

The Italian author and commentator, Ignazio Silone was the initiating member of the Italian Communist Party in 1921. In order to break away from the discrimination of the Fascists, he left into banishment in 1930 to Switzerland. The novelist stayed there till 1945. The central ideas of the majority of his novels revolve around the peasant South, its dispossession, and the impact of Fascism thereon. Among his most famous writings are Fontamara (1930) and Pane e vino. The latter was first in print in English under the title of Bread and Wine (1936), later published in Italian as Pane e vino (1937) (rev. 1955 as Vino e pane).

In his days with them, Pietro observed their living habits and their disputes, and evaluated them in comparison to the perspective of the Roman Communist party. Pietro also experienced a mystical period of self-questioning and analysis, as he realized how the peasants regarded him as a cleric.
The appealing turn in the novel is the fact that Pietro was an optimist who began as a student, desiring to become a sacred soul, and in fact did turn out to be a cleric.
