Barriers between races exist everywhere in our daily lives. They are shown in stereotypes, how we live, and how people are treated. For a society that seems to think of itself as so far advance we definitely are not doing a very good job of working out its’ racial issues. One man took this issue into his own hands. He developed a project to show all of us just how stupid we act.
John Howard Griffin colored his skin black, using a mixture of chemicals and drugs, to explore the life of a black man. He wanted to experience first hand the racism and injustice. He kept a journal of his experiences, and later published them.

He wanders around places he has never been, trying to figure out how to not stand out, how to “fit in”. He faces new problems and fears with each passing day. He gave insight into something that most of us would never be able to imagine experiencing. The author was raised in Texas a prejudice state. So it made his task even harder.
The book, Black Like Me, is a great piece of literature. It shows us how far we have come nut how far we need to go before the race barriers can be broken. It shows people how harshly blacks were treated in the South, all because of the color of their skin. It is because of people like John Griffin, that the world will continue to grow, and change itself.
