Brief Psychodynamic Therapy

Brief Psychodynamic Therapy assumes a persons problems is a repetitive issue from an earlier time in the person’s life. Treatment in both current conflict and the problems origins is believed to resolve the problem allowing that person to deal with similar issues in the future. BPT addresses specific goals, concentrates on analyst and client relationship in six to fifty sessions. BPT is oriented to a specific group of clients. Client must be able to gain insight and have above-average intelligence. They must be able to listen, be honest, open to change, and create a trusting relationship with the counselor.

Two varieties of BPT are Gerald Klerman’s Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Hans Strupp’s Time-Limited Dynamic Psychotherapy. Gerald Klerman’s Interpersonal Psychotherapy which treats depression is short term lasting fourteen to eighteen weekly sessions. He has developed three phases. Phase one identifies the problem and helps client to recognize concerns and issues can be treated. Intermediate Phase sets goals dealing with problem and the strategies to reach these goals. Termination Phase begins two to four weeks prior to end of sessions, helping clients to recognize how to handle their own feelings and to move forward. Hans Strupp’s TLDP deals with patients who have personality disorders, have developed patterns of dependency, and other interpersonal difficulties. His treatment usually takes up to fourteen sessions. His goal is to change a clients behavior, creating new ways of dealing with emotional experiences.
