The idea of the nation-state can be traced originally back to the 14th century. To understand the evolution of the nation-state, one must first have a working definition of each independent idea; the nation and then, the state. Matt Rosenberg, author of both The Handy Geography Answer Book as well as The Geography Bee Complete Preparation Handbook defines Nations as: “A culturally homogeneous groups of people, larger than a single tribe or community, which share a common language, institutions, religion, and historical experience (Rosenberg).” Furthermore, Rosenberg defines a State as having eight required tenets. the country’s geographic territory. Finally, a State must have “external recognition (Rosenberg).” This means that the State’s sovereignty must be accepted on either a local level or/or a national level.

The idea of the Nation-State combines the two separate entities (the Nation and the State) into one, homogeneous geopolitical, societal entity. Arguably, the first occurrence of the Nation-State was found during the Holy Roman Empire followed in short succession by the Ottoman Empire during the 14th (however primarily the 16th and 17th) century (Encyclopedia Britannica).

The 14th century brought along the beginnings of mass literacy. The idea of mass literacy naturally planted the seeds required to gain a sense of a common identity. Because of the geographic vastness of both the Holy Roman Empire as well as the Ottoman Empire, a common national identity was extremely hard to accomplish.
