Since its integration, in 1973, the United Kingdom creates problems in European Union by refusing to agree decisions and it blocks, in a certain way, the development of the European Union. Indeed, other member must find alternatives to this problem. Nonetheless the European Union can’t advance if UK refuses all decisions. What exceptions UK obtain? In what way UK blocks European progress?

A. British exception:

1. Schengen agreement:

As you can see on the map, UK doesn’t agree with all aspects of this convention. The United Kingdom gains on this convention an opt-out. It means that it can don’t respect Schengen terms and acts as it wants. So in UK, boarders still exist. (This map is maybe old and it can be have some changes but not for the British case.)

One on the application of the Charter of the Fundamental rights and the second on the “communautarisation” (1st pillar) of the police and judicial cooperation in penal case, these other opt-outs enable UK to gain flexibility and guard a control on the economy and other government powers.

3. Rebate and CAP:

UK obtains a rebate which enable to reduce its contribution. This rebate was granted as a compensation for the lack of helps that UK doesn’t receive thanks to the CAP.
