In the short story "Cathedral" by Raymond Carver, the central character, the narrator referred to as Bub, learns a lesson in being human from the stranger who visits him and his wife. Actually, the visitor is a stranger only to Bub, for his wife has known the blind man for some time and once worked for him. From the first, though, it is clear that Bub is antagonistic toward the blind man for a number of reasons. Bub is a man who is not as observant as he believes and who has long failed to understand his own limitations or his blind spots. and is even rude to the man directly once the man arrives. He seems to take it as a personal affront that the other man is blind, and yet as the story progresses, we discover that the man who cannot see with his eyes can "see" better than Bub as far as having an understanding of the world and the people in it is concerned.
Bub has ideas about the blind derived largely from the movies, and for Bub the idea he has constitutes a prejudice that is only exacerbated by the fact that this particular blind man is from his wife's past. It is clear that Bub is insecure in his marriage and has doubts about himself more than about his wife--he has good reason given his isolation, for she notes that he has no friends at all while she at least has this one. The relationship between this husband and wife seems especially antagonistic, for she is always ready to assume that her husband is taking digs at her or is criticizing her or is making snide remarks rather than just asking ...
