What is Buchanan, Today?

What do you see in Buchanan? How do people look at Buchanan today, compared to 40+ years ago? A majority would say there isn’t much to the boring rundown town of Buchanan, but that’s where they’re wrong. The history alone gives the small town of Buchanan great potential. Until this past summer, I assumed the same things about Buchanan. Taking an entire day learning, touring, and teaching the history of Buchanan changed my opinion completely. I would have never known Buchanan had so much significance and potential back in the day. I’m glad I had the wonderful opportunity to know more about the town.

after research, I’ve noticed that a lot of the companies and businesses that serviced in Buchanan years ago were owned by lots of family names that are still around today. I believe the thing that held this town together for so long, was the family based businesses.
Most of the businesses, if not all were owned by veterans from WWI and WWII. This town stands very proud of those who came back, and made the town into something great. If it wasn’t for these men who made Buchanan such an attraction it wouldn’t have the history it does today.
In 1918, Fred M. Moyer opened the fist music store; he was drafted shortly after words, and then returned to open a piano and motor car company in 1921. Moyer’s brother in law helped quite a bit and opened Thanning’s Tire store in 1925, the two worked together as a team. Both men were known to help people out in the town as best they could. Neither business is around, but both helped Buchanan out a great deal.
