Cathedral Character Analysis

In this world, we live in a society full of judgment. Raymond Carver in his story “Cathedral” describes a man starting out as very judgmental of his wife’s friend that she has been very close to, and sends videos to every so often because…he is blind. In this first person narrative he makes a point that he is very weary about meeting his wife’s friend and letting him stay in their home. After meeting his wife’s friend there is a significant change in the way he views this man.

he didn’t have good judgments about him. Roberts wife died and he was coming to visit. Bubs wife would pick him up at the train station and he would have a five hour ride. After she wasn’t working for him any more they had lost touch for about a year. She contacted him a year later and they began to send each other tapes quite frequently.
Bub’s wife was cooking dinner and she said to him “If you love me, you can do this for me. If you don’t love me, okay. But if you had a friend, any friend, and they came to visit I would make him feel comfortable.” Bub says, “I don’t have any blind friends” His idea of Robert being blind bothered Bub. His idea of blindness came from the movies where blind people moved slowly and never laughed. Sometimes they were led by seeing-eye dogs… “A blind man in my house was not something I looked forward to.”
