The Anglo-Boer War remains the most terrible and destructive modern armed conflict in South Africa’s history. The South African Wars can be broken up into two different wars; the first Anglo-Boer War and the second Anglo-Boer War.1 The first Anglo-Boer War started in 1880 and only lasted a year, however the second war lasted three years from its initial date in 1899.1 These wars shook the soil of South Africa resulting in an event that caused over 75,000 people their lives.1 The primary characters in this story were the “Boers,” a term used to describe the ...

First Anglo Boer War:

The first Anglo-Boer War, also known as the first Transvaal War, started in December of 1880 and lasted until March of 1881.1 The first conflict between the British and Boers began in early November of 1880 when the British seized a wagon belonging to a Boer. This occurred because the Boers refused to pay extra fees on top of the already paid tax.3 Their refusal to pay resulted in a party of 100 men marching into British land to take back the wagon.3 A series of battles resulted as retribution to this event. It ended in the Boers being victorious, while the British suffered defeat.3 Some argue that this initial event, where the Boers and British faced off, was the origin of all conflict between the two parties; however, others say the war fought between the two was inevitable. Transvaalians were very proud of their independence and would do anything to sustain it.6 Naturally, British imperialism threatened there independence and as a result the Transvaalians became very defensive.6 Thus, it can be said that Britain’s need for expansion could have encouraged and caused the wars through threatening Transvaalian’s nationalism to a point where they had no choice but to retaliate.6
