Character Analysis of “The Story of an Hour”

At a time when women did not have any rights, a woman named Kate Chopin wrote a short story called “The Story of an Hour.” It does not take long to realize Chopin's ability to always keep her characters’ personalities changing. The main character in this short story is Mrs. Mallard who becomes a widow early on in the plot. As the story progresses, we see how Mrs. Mallard deals with her pain but also sees her slowly start to grow as a person. husband’s death” (Chopin 201). Chopin’s word selection gives away how the others think of Mrs. Mallard. Not only do they think her body is in bad health, but her mental state as well. This concept goes one step further when Mrs. Mallard says, “There would be no powerful will bending her” (Chopin 202). This means Mrs. Mallard no longer has a constant oppressor on her. She can start to do things the way she likes it; not her husband’s way.

As Mrs. Mallard starts to think of life without her husband, she starts to feel confused with her own feelings. She was confused because she felt okay with her husband passing on, but knows that is not normal. When she compares herself to other widows she gets uncomfortable because other widows cried for days when their husbands passed but not Mrs. Mallard.
