It is not the plot, nor the setting, nor any other device of writing, but that of character development. By the time our society invented the movies, character development had become a fine and ancient art in the world of written literature. But with the creation of the film came a new problem: how does one develop a character that we can also see and hear? of Charlie Dalton, the reader assumes that he is handsome and ?preppy?. The reader creates a picture in his (or her) mind of a very attractive, Matt Damon-type (he is so hot), above average high school male. Contradictory, in the movie, Charlie is shown as a rather average, scholarly gentleman, leaving no room for the imagination take over. Also, Knox Overstreet is described in the novel as a curly-headed, athletically built young adult; but, in the movie, he is shown as tall and lanky with straight hair. Still, contrary to those characters, the character of Mr. Keating is portrayed precisely the same in both works as an average, scholarly, middle-aged man.
Characters are not always developed through the use of appearance. Also involved are the choices and actions that they make.
