Characterization In Clancy's Red Storm Rising



Characterization is the strongest part of Tom Clancy's Red Storm
Rising. It is the strongest because he dedicates the most time and effort
to it. His best methods of characterization are to allow the reader to read
his characters' thoughts and to jump quickly from character to character.
Allowing the reader to see what the characters are thinking brings
the reader's understanding and compassion for the characters to new levels.
Clancy shows that Lt. Toland has doubts about killing a fellow human being,
war or no war. This develops Toland's compassion and humanity. Also, the
reader learns that Capt. Morris has too much compassion to tell his dead
sailors' families about their tragic ...

a man stranded with 4 marines in an enemy
occupied Iceland, as he kills three Russians in order to save a girl from
rape. If his actions weren't enough, the reader sees in italics the
sanctity and respect that he holds for women and his fellow human beings.
Showing the thoughts of the characters brings the reader even closer to the
story and the men in involved with it.
Clancy's other wonderful method of characterization is to quickly
jump from character to character. He might spend a half of a page, or three
to four pages on one character, but he keeps the reader informed about all
of the characters almost simultaneously. This whets the reader's appetite
and their imagination. While reading about Toland doing Intelligence in
England, the reader imagines what is happening to Lt. Edwards in Iceland.
The reader molds the characters into what he wants them to be. The pieces
of plot and characterization all turn into one big yeast-filed pile of
dough that just seems to grow by ...
