In the time period of Geoffrey Chaucer, the church was supposed to be a holy place to praise God, but it was often the opposite. The church was often a place of deceit, deception, and murder, instead of a sacred temple in which to glorify God. To an observant eye, the church would appear to be nothing more than a sickeningly corrupt institution whose purpose was to control the hearts of the weak and humble, but Chaucer knew the real problem was not the church but instead those who used the church for their own twisted ways. Chaucer exposes the people who use the church for their own purpose in the literary work Canterbury Tales.
