The days marched on, and the warm breeze turned to cool wind, and the clear expanse of sky began to fill with white clouds and then soon after, dull grey wisps that brought gentle showers of rain. As the clouds circled the tree in each passing day, the more life it lost. The summer gradually edged to a close with its vibrant colours running from the scene, dripping darkness back into the earth and the sense of life and energy ebbing into the birth of autumn.

Within weeks the tree’s radiant cherry glow slowly bled into faint porcelain and then the brown of decay. More and more of the petals escaped their branches, no longer dancing weightlessly as they fell, but landing heavily and fast as they were beaten by the coarse rain. Branches wilted and grew naked. The barren surface of the bark faced the harsh weather nature hurled at it with no mercy, standing tall and proud despite being so bare.
