In the stories Uncle Tom's Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe and The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglass, both show a strong influence in God. In Uncle Tom's Cabin, in every situation Tom constantly puts his faith in God. In The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, Frederick's master Mr. Covey, claims to be a Christian, but he does not live a Christian lifestyle. Mr. Covey and Tom are both Christians but they live completely opposite lifestyles.

The Life and Times of Frederick Douglass, by Frederick Douglass, is a narrative about his struggles as a young slave. Frederick's master Mr. Thomas, sends him to Mr. Covey, a fierce Negro breaker. Mr. Covey beats Douglass often and is completely overpowering. One day while working Douglass becomes too ill to work. When Mr. Covey discovers Douglass in his staggering condition, he beats him severely. Out of desperation, Douglass makes his way back to his master, Mr. Thomas. However, his master sends him right back to Covey. One day Douglass some how musters up the courage to stand up to Covey. Douglass battles Covey back when he tries to beat him. After the battle, Covey never physically harms him again.

However, Tom drowns out Quimbos brutal words with the word of God. "Fear not them that kill the body, and, after that, have know more that they can do" (1031). "Nerve and bone of that poor mans body vibrated to those word's, as if touched by the finger of God; and he felt the strength of a thousand souls in one" (1031).
