While exploration of the New World was still in it's infancy, Christopher Columbus was discovering new and foreign lands, people, crops, and minerals. Spain in trying to get an advantage on Portugal in the Southeast Asia spice trade mapped a westerly route across the Atlantic in hopes to lesser the journey than to go around Africa. eventually would be financially backed by Spain. Between 1492- 1503 Christopher Columbus took four trips to the Americas; refusing even until his death in 1506 that he wasn't in Asia.

Soon after arriving in the Caribbean, Christopher Columbus was able to seize many of the islands by minimal force and capture a few natives to help guide and mediate for him. The Spanish saw these new lands as a chance for exploitation and to strike it rich. The fertile soil would be great for harvesting crops and breeding livestock, the gold and silver would expand their riches beyond what they could imagine, and the natives could be used for slaves and servants. For Spain this would bring enumerable power. For the natives however this new guest would lead to their extinction.
