Churchgoing: Poetry Analysis


The poem Churchgoing portrays the actual act of going to church as a faithless ritual. Marilyn Nelson conveys a very mundane attitude in this poem to describe the atmosphere in the church. The church attendants “sit stolidly,” while the ceremony drags on. The narrator of the poem is also on the verge of sleep, wondering whatever happened to the ideal church, which at the least included a spiritual aura. The title “Churchgoing” simplistically fits the poem as it describes the simple people who attend the services not knowing why they are really there. The church attendees show up at the church, nothing more.

To the people in this poem going to church is like grocery shopping. It is something that must be done. Everyone knows it is the right thing to do, except in this case many people do not understand the concept behind it. Religion does not make a difference. If their parents shop at the Piggly Wiggly then they may also. If their parents are Luthern then they are also. People withdrew the meaning of religion over time. Almost like in Orwell’s 1984, how people just did things because it was expected of them. The people do not think about why they are going. They do not necessarily believe in the values in the church - if they even know what they are. And, people do not discuss church events for fear of people discovering their ignorance of it.
Churchgoing seems to be the socially acceptable thing to do. The title is very simple. The attendants of the church are also very simple. They obviously do not have a deep train of thought since they do not ...
