This paper presents a case study and treatment of a young African American female who is experiencing a major depressive episode (Butcher, Mineka & Hooley, 2010) during her first year of college. Within the context of this paper, we will present the case and offer a treatment plan using cognitive therapy as the psychotherapy technique for the disorder.

It is also important to note that Shafaney has an over achieving sister for whom she was always being compared to by her mother. During her early childhood and adolescents years, all she would hear from her mother, “You are not like our sister. Your sister did a better job than you. Why can’t you get good grades like your sister?” This sibling comparison has had a major impact on her self-esteem and self-belief. Shafaney shared with us that she feels intensely sad, lonely and unworthy during the evening hours when she is alone in her dormitory room.
Shafaney has now sought our counseling services to deal with her mental condition and predicated upon the description of this scenario, we will engage her with the treatment of cognitive therapy.
