The Jesuit missionaries were very well-known for their efforts; they lived in Indian villages, learned their languages, and practiced their customs in order to persuade them to convert to Catholicism. They converted 10,000 Indians in 40 years. However, their efforts stopped when the Crown assumed control of the government. Together, the Spanish and French were able to turn the Indians into a large Catholic society. This is also why the Indians sided with the French in the French and Indian war.

Few Indians converted to Protestantism due to the attitudes the English and Dutch had with the Indians. The Dutch barely had any missionary effort to convert the Indians to Protestantism.
