Civil Rights activist, Anne Moody was born in rural Wilkinson County, Mississippi in 1940. Anne Moody grew up on a plantation were her parents where sharecroppers. Her autobiography, , details the suffering of growing up in a racist society. Her account of her life starts at the age of 4. She remembers not seeing her parents that much because they where always in the fields. Moody and her baby sister were watched by their uncle who was not much older than they were. He resented having to look after them and was very abusive.

being mistreated, beat, and even killed for no other reason but their color. The event in Anne’s childhood followed her into adolescence. Anne’s challenging spirit was growing. This caused a bad relationship with her mother; she wanted Anne to just follow those before her. She began to hear of blacks that were standing up for themselves and about the civil rights movement. By high school Anne was fed up and after graduation Anne went away to college, partly to get away from the increasing acts of racism, mostly to broaden her mind from the small confinements of Wilkinson County. While in college she met others like her, who wanted to fight against injustice. She became involved in organizations like the NAACP, CORE (Congress of Racial Equality) and the SNCC (Student Non-violent Coordination Committee). She also was involved in the integration of the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Jackson, Mississippi. She helps lead a voter registration drive in rural Caton, Mississippi. ...
