Comparative Analysis Between The Lottery and The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas

"The Lottery" (published 1948) by Shirley Jackson and "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" (published 1973) by Ursula K. Le Guin share similar conflicts. The parallel between the two is the ill representation of character vs. society. This key similarity leads to a similar general observation in that one should not always proceed to follow the majority, especially if their rules go against one's values.

Likewise, in "The Lottery," when mentioned that some towns have stopped their lottery, Old Man Warner is baffled and asserts the stupidity in that (628). This is a detailed clue because Warner is the oldest man and a top authority of the town (625). This makes him a persuasive act for the bulk of the population and the minority don't stand in questioning the mass ruling, so they do not try.
Jackson and Le Guin both present utilitarian aspects. Utilitarianism is the concept of increasing the net happiness of the universe. In Omelas, they believe that the suffering of the child is a necessary cause for the outcome of their utopian society.
