One of America's most prominent black authors is Richard Wright writes mostly from the African American perspective. Both his novel Native Son and his short stories The Man Who Was Almost a Man (from the collection Eight Men) deals with young black men in their quest and struggles to become "men." Neither character nor their struggles are in any way similar except for the objective of heir struggles. Not only does Wright deal with the struggles of young men becoming "men" but he also deals with society in terms of racism, oppression, as well as "black" dialogue. with his desire to be considered as a man with the contrast of the oppression by white society not allowing him to become the man that he wants to be. Black society constantly deals with the way that they are looked down upon by white society which is the main problem that Bigger has with the life that he lives. Bigger deals with the treatment and accepts it until he encounters a couple of white people who do not treat him the same that the rest of society does. Not knowing what to do he retaliates against these people and in turn hurts them in a deeper way (death)than white society has hurt him throughout his life. The novel ends with a trial ruling to take the life of Bigger just as he had taken the life of the young white woman who had only wanted to befriend young black Bigger.
