Animal Farm was published in August 1945, just near the end of World War II. It is commonly accepted as a fable describing the failures of communism. After the war, respect for communist forms of government was growing around the world. Orwell tried to show through his book that Russia was not a true Socialist country.
It is in Animal Farm that Orwell’s social theory, which can be seen through a careful reading of what the animals refer to as Animalism. Animalism, as we will see, has its faults and inaccuracies, Orwell’s use of it is to put forth his own political and social doctrine based on remedying those faults (“Animalism”).

The animals on the farm do many other things that are very similar to what the people of Russia were going through in their everyday lives. Just like in the novel, the gun that sits at the foot of the flagstaff is a reminder of the Battle of Cowshed. It is also a criticism on the method behind the Rebellion, therby a criticism on Trosky’s methods of revolutions as well (“Animalism”).
After Lenin’s death in 1924, there was a struggle between Joseph Stalin and Trotsky for leadership of the Communist party (“Animal”). There was the same struggle between Snowball, who was much like Trotsky, and Napoleon, the pig who was much like Stalin, in the novel. It was always made a point to use Snowball as a scapegoat for Napoleon leading up the animals running him off the farm.
