Comparison Of Conroy's "Prince Of Tides" And "The Great Santini"



The novels Prince of Tides by Pat Conroy and The Great Santini by
Pat Conroy are different in terms of order and detail. It is from these
events that the reader is able to see how the main character in each novel
progresses with his growth, how he sees his life, and how others view his
life. In both novels the main character seems to view himself as normal
but really he is very unique. In The Great Santini the focus is more on
the father and the way that he treats his children when he is back from his
term in the marine corps, or possibly on his son and how he views his

The narrator paints a very good picture for the reader and therefore gives
the reader a good sense of Tom's difficult family life, and sees how it has
made Tom into the man that he is (a loving father and husband).
In the novel The Great Santini, Pat Conroy also uses first-person
narration. Bull's son tells the story about how his father treats him and
the rest of the family. Ben talks about how his father is very dedicated
to the Marine corps and how he expects that since he is in the corps that
his son will follow in his footsteps.

"Go ahead and laugh, jocko, but I break out in a cold sweat when I spot a
flock of birds up yonder. The bad thing is that they're usually behind you
by the time see'em. I mean they are behind you before your brain registers
