Machiavelli wrote a manuscript on how to be a better ruler. He had originally intended his works not to go public, but to be used privately by Lorenzo de Medici. To be a Machievellian Prince, one must have many great aspects. Hamlet and Claudius both wanted to be Machievellian Princes. Only one was a true Machiavellian Prince, Hamlet.
A major aspect of being a Machiavellian Prince is knowing what you are capable and not capable of pulling off. Hamlet carefully planed out how he was going to catch Claudius. He couldn’t just go in and kill the guy because the people would be against him.
A Machiavellian Prince has to be liked by his people. His people are his fortress. If he were to just walk in and kill a king, the people would kill him. Hamlet had to catch Claudius in front of the people. He devised a plan to add some lines to a play. The lines would consist of King Hamlet’s murder exactly how Claudius did it. When the lines are read, the emotional reponse of Claudius would be observed. The original story would remain the same. The Players agreed to do it. “... I’ll catch the conscious of the King.” Hamlet gathered many people into the theater including the king and queen. As soon as the lines were read, Claudius stood up and ran out.
