Comparison of Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson

Daisy Buchanan and Myrtle Wilson are two female characters in The Great Gatsby, with Daisy the wife of Tom Buchanan and Myrtle the woman he is having an affair with. These two women represent characters who are almost opposites in many regards. The major differences include their wealth, their vitality, and their emotional ability. These differences will now be illustrated in more detail.

Tom because of his wealth, and where they are together in New York, it is clear that Myrtle is trying to transform herself into someone who fits in with the rich crowd. While her actions do come across as desperate, there is also a sense of life and hope that is not present in Daisy's character.
This leads to another major difference between the two women, which is their vitality. Fitzgerald emphasizes Daisy's character through her voice, where at one point Nick finally realizes that her voice is full of money. As he narrates, "That was it. I'd never understood it before. It was full of money--that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbals' song of it" (Fitzgerald 101). This reference to the money in her voice illustrates that everything she does is just done on the surface. Money creates the appearance that Tom and Daisy have better lives and have better characters. However, this is only appearance with money not going any deeper. ...
