In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee describes a southern community in the south during the 1930s. The great detail that is given the characters is rendered through the reflective eyes of a child named Scout. She describes the people and their place in the community in great detail. Each person has his or her niche in the community. This can be compared to the Dewey Decimal System of classifying books in a library where every book has its logical place, but is an integral part of the library community. In Maycomb each person has their place and each affect one another and their ways of life.

also had its classification system. In the book, Jem confused the Dewey Decimal System with John Dewey’s philosophy of education. This is clear when Scout says, “What Jem called the Dewey Decimal System was school wide by the end of my first year, so I had no chance to compare it to any other teaching technique, I could only look around me” (Lee 37). Dewey’s educational philosophy was the new way students were to be taught in the Maycomb schools. It stressed the hands on experiential method of teaching. Jem easily confused John Dewey’s new way of teaching with Melvil Dewey’s classification system because it was the Dewey Decimal System that he was familiar with since he was such an avid reader. Scout mentioned in the book that Jem read every book he could get his hands on.
Maycomb County like the Dewey Decimal System was an organized society where everyone had his or her own place. Most had their own position in society based on race, financial standing, and intellectual ability. ...
