Abstract

This thesis focuses on comparing Emily Brontë’s masterpiece and her only novel Wuthering Heights with the film adaptation in 2011 directed by Andrea Arnold. It concentrates mainly on the different portraits of the two main characters, Catherine and Heathcliff and the varied ways of narrative in the novel and the Arnold’s film version.

perspective that is more direct and vivid for people to understand and analyze the literary classics. In addition, with the rapid development of science and technology, the social demand for aesthetics has the tendency of a more direct and popular form like the films which have the advantage of visualization. By comparing the novel and its film adaption, we can have a more integrated understanding of the story as well as a more thorough understanding of these two art forms. After finishing the novel, I chose the 2011 film adaptation, for it is the latest one and personally I like the actress who plays the role of Catherine. And this thesis aims to analyze and compare the differences in portraying the main character, Catherine and Heathcliff, and the different means of narrative of the story.

1.Differences in the portraits of Catherine and Heathcliff

seems uninterested in Catherine’s situation. As one of the most famous parts in the novel, this scene in the film may just result in the disappointment of the viewers. The scene when Catherine meets Heathcliff for the last time is also quite different. In the film, she is lying in the living room, while in the novel, she is locked in her room all the time. She blames both Edgar and Heathcliff for her coming death. She whispers to Heathcliff that Edgar breaks her heart and that he leads to her death.
