Comparison of the Chukchi Sea and the Kara Sea

The Chukchi Sea is characterized by its Sub-Arctic climate, a high-latitude marine region situated off of Russia's East Siberian coast and the Northwestern coast of Alaska (USA). This region is driven by the formation and deformation of sea ice.
Main species of the region are salmon, herring, walrus, seals, whales, and waterfowl. Most of the catches of the area are gray whales, walruses, ringed seals and salmon. Fish such as Arctic cod, flatfish, and smelt are abundant here. A large part of Chukchi region is in a relatively static condition due to sparse population, even though a major issue is the threat of thinning polar ice pack. ...

On the other hand, the Kara Sea is characterized by a large marine ecosystem, located within the Polar Cycle on the huge Siberian shelf (Povinec, Osvath, Baxter, Ballestra, Carroll, Gastaud, Harms, Huynh-Ngoc, Liong Wee Kwong, and Pettersson, 1997). The Kara Sea is seasonally ice covered, and is facilitated by the arrival of warm ocean currents from the North Atlantic and high salt levels. Oil and gas development and fisheries impacts cause severe threats to the region. Radioactive materials dumped into the Kara Sea are resulting the deaths of sea stars, shellfish, seals, porpoises and fishes. Lack of facilities for processing industrial waste and contaminations are major ecological problems for the Kara Sea.
