the ability to do both tasks. Computer software provides thousands of opportunities to perform these tasks. Whether one is playing games, surfing the net, reading and writing emails or using the computer for other functions there are many levels of literacy required to complete these tasks.
Playing computer games provides practice in hand-eye coordination which studies have shown prepare children for reading and many of today's computer games also provide a long and involved story with each level reached which encourages reading. In addition there are many software products that are designed to promote literacy including the well known Reading Rabbit. "Using a series of sequenced stories, 3- to 7-year-olds begin to learn through groupings of engaging and fun lessons(Szadkowski, 1999 )."
