and ended up drinking up all the money. This left Mary’s family to make all their money on their own. Mary became a governess and then a teacher, and finally a writer (Jacobus, 799). In the early eighteen hundreds being a woman alone was hard. Despite this, Mary overcame the standards of her day, especially during her teen years, and became a wonderful and inspirational woman and is still considered one of the most influential women in history. Today, the standards are different than those of Wollstonecraft’s day. Looking like a model, having a well paying job, being smart and athletic, being politically correct, and being liberal are just a few of the standards set by Americans today. Just like Wollstonecraft, it is very important for the teenagers of today to overcome these standards and become their own person.
