Contrasting Ralph & Jack

In the novel The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, Ralph and Jack are two characters with similar beliefs but are unable to develop a true friendship due to their differences which only allows for a rivalry between each other. Both boys assert their authoritarian qualities when in a position of leadership. However, as opposed to Ralph, Jack uses it for his own advantage and personal gain. Ralph likes to make it evident that "he [is] chief, and you are going to do what [he] says" (Golding 74). He is quick to assert his power when his position of power is challenged by Jack. to capture and restrain Sam and Eric. Ralph uses his power to form a democracy whereas Jack favours savagery and primitivism. Moreover, Ralph acts with long term goals in mind. He concentrates on being rescued and pushes for the fire to be maintained regularly to keep a smoke signal. However, Jack desires instant gratification.
