Conversation Of The Huron’s


As more Europeans came to the New World they witnessed Indian life first-
hand. Most of what they saw appalled them. They believed that the Huron
Indians were no more than savages without Christ. The Jesuits saw the
Indian civilization in severe trouble because of its lack in Christian
values.
The Indians viewed the arrival of this news and practice of beliefs as
intriguing but still were reluctant to give up their old ways of religion
and pursue a new foreign one. Although both religions agreed on a supreme
being to guide their immortal soul, the Hurons had so much more to their
way of life that was not so easy to be left behind. For example, the

had been overcome but many more were to follow. Perhaps the
biggest being the language barrier between the two. The Jesuits were still
persistent to learn the very hard language. Many times they would
encounter Christian beliefs that not even a word could be developed for in
Huron.

More and more the Jesuits worked along side the Indians. Each day they
were being forced to view these lives led without any type of restraint or
standards. Any interjections from the Christian culture was not even
respected by the Huron’s. The Jesuits tried to break the Huron’s beliefs
through many attempts. One successful try was corrupting the meanings
which the Indians cherished. The way they proceeded their idea was to
start by proving their dreams ineffective. From that point some
conversions could be made.

Time passed and Huron’s and Europeans continued to live side by side. Soon
the Huron’s became dependent on outside resources from Europe. That would
