HENRY IV PART 1: COURAGE AND JUSTICE

Henry IV Part 1 is one of the greatest history plays by Shakespeare because it doesn't focus on the intricacies of politics but tries to highlight the essential virtues of a king in the making. It is important to study this play as a prelude to its subsequent parts because here we encounter all the important characters and playwright offers us a rare insight into the characters of both the King Henry IV and his son.

become more of a liability to the nation. In Henry IV, we notice that both the father and son possessed their own brand of justice and courage. While Henry believed in actively showing courageous traits both on and off the battlefield, Prince Hal felt that courage must be shown only when it is needed. Secondly, we also notice a major difference in the way King and his son perceive their duties as rulers of England. While Henry depends on other powerful rulers for maintenance of peace and order in the country, Prince Hal only depends on himself and his strength. This is an essential difference between the two rulers and says a great deal about their perception of courage.

Henry IV was not exactly a very courageous person because he had usurped power from his cousin through political trickery.
