Criminal Court Visit

The date I observed the court cases was December 2, 2016 at the Carroll County MD, district court. The district court cases only take about a few minutes per case which was surprising to me. There was one case of two brothers from Taneytown who were charged with armed robbery, theft, and first degree assault. One brother was 20 years old and the other was 18 years old. One of the brothers assaulted the victim with a shotgun and then stole the shotgun. I missed what the sentencing was but I did hear their bail was set at $250,00. have a job but will come up with the money. A couple people didn't even show up for court as well.
The appearance for almost all of the defendants shocked me the most. I showed up in jeans and a long sleeve shirt. I felt as if I was over dressed compared to some of the individuals. For example, one woman showed up to court in jeans and a hunting camo sweatshirt which I found very peculiar. The atmosphere of the courtroom was nothing like I had expected. Comparing court rooms to TV shows like Law & Order or Judge Judy, I expected the court to be filled with people and for the cases to take much longer. Both lawyers and the judge had great respect for each other and there wasn't any lashing out like in TV shows. Both lawyers for the plaintiff and defendant would talk to each other during the trial and clarify things or to inform one another.
