When you talk about criminal law, there is also a jurisdiction that is set in place for criminals. Jurisdiction is something that covers several areas; for instance if a county police officer goes outside the county they have no jurisdiction to pull someone over in another county. Jurisdiction also applies to how the court system is organized. Depending on the crime each jurisdiction has different penalties for the crime that has been committed. The court system is organized by three different types of jurisdiction which person, place and type of crime that has been committed. So depending on the jurisdiction that the crime has happened in depends on the punishment in which it will be handled.
